    Dry Mouth and Hormones:

    The Autonomic Lens

Dry mouth is often described as “not enough saliva,” but that phrase misses part of the story. Saliva is a tightly regulated secretion shaped by the nervous system, gland function, medications, hydration, disease, and—less directly—hormonal state. A person can also experience dry mouth even when measured salivary flow is within the normal range.

A New Look at Peptide Bioregulators

I’m excited to introduce a new section in the Wellness by Design Project shop featuring peptide bioregulators—an intriguing area of research in healthy aging and cellular function.

Much of the early work in this field was pioneered by Vladimir Khavinson, M.D., Ph.D., a Russian physician, gerontologist, and professor who devoted decades to studying the role of small peptides in the regulation of aging. Khavinson directed the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology and published extensively on peptide regulation, gene expression, and the biology of aging. His research included investigations into how short peptides might interact with cellular and genetic regulatory systems.

So, what exactly is a peptide bioregulator?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that can act as biological messengers, helping cells communicate and regulate important processes. The concept behind peptide bioregulators is that certain small peptides may influence cellular signaling, gene expression, protein synthesis, and tissue function. Khavinson's research proposed that these peptides could help support the body's regulatory systems rather than simply replacing something that has declined with age. His work on peptide regulation of gene activity and aging was published in the scientific literature as early as the 1990s and continued for decades.

This is one reason I find the field so interesting. It takes us beyond the familiar idea of simply replacing what the body loses with age and asks a different question: Can we support the cellular signals that help maintain healthy function?

The science is still evolving, and I think it's important to distinguish promising research from therapies whose benefits have been firmly established in large human clinical trials. But the questions raised by Khavinson's work are fascinating—and they fit beautifully with the larger conversation we're having about healthy aging, cellular function, and longevity.

I've now gathered several peptide-focused products in one place so you can explore this emerging field and learn more about the individual peptide bioregulators available through the Wellness by Design Project.

    RECOMMENDED EDUCATION

    Go Deeper

I believe good health education should give us enough information to ask better questions and make more informed decisions. I’m pleased to recommend these educational resources from Dr. Lindsey Berkson and Dr. David Brownstein, whose work has contributed meaningfully to the conversation around hormones, breast health, nutrition, and integrative medicine.

These courses offer an opportunity to go beyond the usual sound bites and explore these subjects in greater depth.

Appointments with The Wellness By Design Project typically begin with Carol getting to know you, and a chance for you to get to know Carol!

Every initial visit with the Carol begins with a consultation, in order to accurately understand your issues. If Carol feels that additional testing or labs are necessary she will get those ordered.

At the follow-up appointment, we will discuss your current condition and your goals, take a look at the overall results, and provide you with a plan to achieve your goal. Together, we will come up with a treatment plan specifically for you, and answer any questions you might have regarding your health care.
